Reels, lines and ways
Classic video slots pay along fixed or selectable paylines — patterns across the reel grid. Many newer titles use “ways to win” systems that pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel, without traditional line drawings. Neither format changes the core fact: each spin is an independent random event.
Volatility
Volatility (sometimes called variance) describes how uneven results can feel. Lower-volatility games tend to return smaller outcomes more often. Higher-volatility games can stay quiet for longer stretches, then produce larger outcomes when they hit. That pattern is a design choice, not a promise that a big result is “due”.
RTP as a concept
Return to Player (RTP) is a theoretical long-run percentage calculated over a very large number of spins in controlled testing. It is not a prediction for your next hour at the machine. A game listing 96% RTP does not mean you personally keep £96 of every £100 staked in a short session.
Themes and mechanics
Themes — mythology, fruit, adventure — are packaging. Underneath, common mechanics include free-spin rounds, multipliers, cascading symbols and progressive jackpots funded by a contribution from stakes. Always open the in-game help file: it states paytables, feature triggers and any regional RTP configuration the studio has set for that market.
Licensed play still needs limits
